Answers to Basic Questions about Sciatica

What Causes Sciatica?

Spinal disorders that can cause compression of the Sciatic nerve include: bulging or herniated disks (slipped disks), spine subluxations (misaligned vertebral bodies), pregnancy and childbirth, non-spinal disorders such as, constipation diabetes, and or sitting on one's back wallet.

A common cause of sciatica is piriformis syndrome, a syndrome name after the piriformis muscle. This muscle connects the spine to the hip bone and aids rotation. The piriformis is sometimes injured by a slip or fall, a difference in leg length, or hip arthritis.

Sciatic nerve compression not only creates pain but can result in paralysis of a limb or group of muscles (monoplegia), loss of feeling, and insomnia.

How is Sciatica Diagnosed?

Because Sciatica is caused by many disorders, a chiropractor must first determine the cause of your condition. A proper diagnosis often requires an -ray, CT scan, MRI, and/or nerve conduction velocity or NCV), and/or electrodiagnostic tests (electromyography).

How Do You Treat Sciatica?

The treatment required depends on the cause of a person’s sciatica. A typical course of treatment includes:

  • Ultrasound – uses sound waves to produce gentle heat that penetrates soft tissues (e.g. muscles and tendons) to reduce stiffness, cramping, muscle swelling and spasms, and sciatic pain.
  • Ice/ Cold – helps to reduce inflammation that excess pressure.
  • TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) – a small, portable muscle stimulating machine. Variable intensities of electrical current are employed to reduce muscle spasms and control acute pain.
  • Spinal adjustments – Spinal manipulation is used to free restricted movement and restore vertebral bodies (subluxation) resulting in a proper realignment of the spine. Such an adjustment helps to reduce the nerve irritability that responsible for inflammation and pain.

Are there any Limitations in Treating Sciatica with Chiropractic Treatment?

Yes. On rare occasions, Sciatica nerve pain can be caused by a disorder beyond your chiropractor’s scope. Should that be determined, we will refer you to another specialty. Generally, we continue to treat a patient and co-manage ongoing recovery with the other specialist.
