The sciatic nerve exits the spine in the lower back runs down the back of the legs and all the way to the feet. Sciatica is caused by anything that irritates the nerve along its length. Dr. Stephen Armstrong of Armstrong Chiropractic is committed to helping patients with pain management and improving their overall health and well-being.
What is Sciatica?
The most common way that this nerve is irritated is through a slipped or herniated intervertebral disc in the spine. Intervertebral discs are firm discs of cartilage that separate and cushion the spinal bones. With age or injury, these discs can wear out. The sciatic nerve exits the spinal cord right and passes out of the spine right in front of the intervertebral disc and between bony structures. When something causes the intervertebral disc to press on the nerve sciatica nerve pain results. Other spinal problems, muscle spasms, pregnancy, and even sitting on a wallet too often can cause sciatica.
Common Sciatica Symptoms
Sciatica pain varies from person to person. It can range from lower back pain, hip pain, pain in the buttocks or backs of the thighs or lower legs, or even foot pain. It can have elements of muscle weakness or problems moving the leg or the foot. It can include burning or tingling sensations. The pain can be a mild ache, or sharp and severe. It can last a few weeks in very mild cases. In others, it can be a long-term problem. Chiropractic can often help.
