Curved Spine

Curved Spine Treatment in Temple

A healthy human spine has a slight front-to-back curve in an "S" shape. If your spine isn't shaped like this, for example, if it has an exaggerated front-to-back curve or if it curves side-to-side, you can end up with long-term postural problems, back pain, and even problems with your internal organs. Chiropractic care is one treatment option for people who have a curved spine. At Armstrong Chiropractic in Temple, one of the things we do is help patients improve their posture and manage pain related to disorders of the spine.

Three Common Types of Curved Spine

There are three main disorders that involve an abnormal curvature of the spine: scoliosis, kyphosis, and lordosis.

  • Lordosis is also known as swayback. A person with this condition has an exaggerated curve in the lower part of their back.
  • Kyphosis is an abnormal curvature of the upper back. A person with this condition may look like their back is rounded or hunched.
  • Scoliosis involves a side-to-side (rather than front-to-back) curvature of the spine. This curve can be C-shaped or S-shaped.

Sometimes, curvature of the spine can be genetic. It may be present at birth, or it may develop later in life. For example, scoliosis commonly appears when children go through puberty. Other times, these problems with the spine can develop over months or years if a person has chronic poor posture.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help with a Curved Spine

Curvature of the spine often gets worse over time if it's left untreated. This can lead to increasingly bad problems with your posture and a corresponding increase in back pain. Some doctors recommend wearing a brace to prevent or slow down further curvature of the spine, but another option you shouldn't overlook is visiting a chiropractor on a regular basis.

Chiropractic care aims to restore the greatest possible degree of alignment and flexibility to the spine. When you visit a chiropractor, they will look for subluxations (or misalignments) in your spine and gently adjust any misaligned vertebrae with their hands or a specialized instrument. These adjustments decrease inflammation in your back and improve the function of your nervous system. This, in turn, reduces your back pain and helps your body heal itself more efficiently. Your chiropractor may also teach you exercise to strengthen your back muscles and improve your posture.
